2023 SUMMER NEWSLETTER

Hello Dear Readers!

I am thrilled to share, hot off the press, the stunning cover of my new book, The London Bookshop Affair, coming to a shop near you in early 2024. I hope you like it as much as I do!

Covers are of huge importance in the book world. It’s the first thing a reader will see when browsing for a new book, and so it needs to be enticing enough to be plucked off the shelf for a closer look. I think this one does the trick, and am hugely grateful to my publishers for this design.

Of course, what’s between the covers matters too, so here is a little taste of what’s inside:

It’s 1962, and the world is teetering on the brink of nuclear war. But daily life must go on. South London girl Celia Duchesne longs for a career but with no means, connections, or qualifications, she spends her days at the till of a dusty antiquarian bookshop on the Strand, unable to see a way out. The day a handsome American walks into the shop, she thinks she might have found it. Just as the excitement of a budding relationship engulfs her, she learns a devastating secret that draws her into the murky world of espionage.

Twenty years prior, nineteen-year-old Anya Moreau was dropped behind enemy lines to aid the resistance in occupied France, sending messages back to London via wireless transmitter. When she was cruelly betrayed and handed over to the Nazis, evidence of her legacy and the truth of her actions were buried by wartime injustices.

As Celia learns more about Anya—and her unexpected connection to the undercover agent—she becomes increasingly aware of furious efforts, both past and present, to protect state secrets, at all costs. With her newly formed romance taking a surprising turn and the world’s superpowers on the verge of nuclear annihilation, Celia must risk everything she holds close to her heart, in the name of justice.

Based on true events and people for inspiration, this book was both tricky but fun to write, and I can’t wait for you to find out more!!

The book will be out in hardback, paperback, ebook and audio on 16th January 2024 in America and Canada, and can be pre-ordered in the US here, and Canada here. In the UK, it will be out in ebook and audio on the same date, but in paperback on 29th February 2024 and can be pre-ordered at Bookshop.org here, Waterstones here or Amazon here. For Australia and New Zealand, you can pre-order here or here.

I would be enormously grateful for any pre-orders. They matter more than I ever realised in the publishing world because they indicate to the publisher the potential interest in an upcoming book. If pre-orders are strong, the publisher will put much more effort into marketing that book to make it a success. Vice versa, if pre-orders are weak, they are more likely to write it off before it is even published.

I am also very happy to let you know that the title and cover for this book, unlike for my previous two, will be the same all across the English speaking world. This is because I have changed publisher here in the UK and in the Commonwealth countries. My US publisher, HarperCollins (via their imprint William Morrow) will be publishing The London Bookshop Affair across the English speaking world which makes things very much simpler!

The London Bookshop Affair will also be published in France by my French publishers, Bragelonne, in April 2024. This news is very new, so more on this with details of where to pre-order in the next newsletter.

I took the above picture in a recent research trip to Paris. Brasserie Balzar is an iconic restaurant around the corner from the famous Sorbonne University. My sister used to be a professor there, and she took me for a delicious meal and a reminisce! The area used to be full of publishers and the restaurant was where intellectuals, authors, academics, publishers used to meet and discuss literature. It felt like a fitting venue to be dining in!

The past six months or so have been particularly tough for various reasons, so I decided to be kind to myself and take some time off writing during the school/university summer holidays. It won’t be long before the family fly the nest and spending time with the young ones before they go off to live their own lives is precious. I have, however, been mulling over ideas for the next book, researching and thinking, and will be back, hopefully in full flow, at my writing desk in September.

And so for now, with a photo I took on a recent trip to Beautiful Loch Tay in Scotland, I wish you all a happy and restful remainder of the summer. Bon voyage!

Louise xx
